  • (Now to 22nd Dec): At Gowran Park in Gowran, they will be running trains from Gowran Park deep into the forest guided by Santa’s Elf’s to the top secret location where Santa rests and prepares for his round the world trip on Christmas Eve. Children will then get to meet and chat with both Santa & Mrs Claus and even get a little gift to remind them of their visit.
  • (Now to 23rd Dec): Chritmas Village at Mount Juliet has stalls from dozens of the finest local suppliers for you browse your way through on your visit to our beloved estate. Open Daily, 12pm to 9pm. Mount Juliet's popular homemade produce is available in our own Christmas shop aka the golf shop - including jams, chutneys and vinaigrettes. Mount Juliet's restaurants have special family menus during this time, so that everyone can enjoy the Christmas Village and also keep warm with great food.
  • (Now to 24th Dec): At the Castlecomer Discovery Park, on arrival, adults can enjoy a complimentary mulled wine/beverage, while children (and adults!) are entertained by our friendly Head Elf playing lots of fun games in the charming Oak-beamed visitor centre. You can take in the wonder of the park on the Christmas Train.
  • (Now to 24th Dec): Made In Kilkenny have a Pop Up Christmas shop on 7 John Street in the centre of Kilkenny City. Open daily from 10am to 6pm. This year's shop is located on John's street over the street from the Rivercourt Hotel. There will be a wide selection of locally made, fine quality craftwork by 17 of the MADE in Kilkenny group's members. Beautiful Ceramics, Jewellery, Candles, Woolens, Leather, Glass - a one-stop-shop for original Christmas gift ideas to suit all.

  • Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny - access from Parliment Street - 10am to 6pm daily, €12/9.50/7 - This multi-sensory and interactive experience will take visitors on a journey through the medieval origins of brewing on the site of the St. Francis Abbey Brewery to the arrival of John Smithwick in the 1700’s, and right up to the present day.  The tour includes a life-size holographic monk and living portraits of the Smithwick’s family members.  During the tour, the Smithwick’s brewing process will be brought to life with visitors having the opportunity to experience the smells, tastes and textures of the raw materials involved in creating the perfect pint of ale. French, German, Spanish and Italian speaking visitors will be offered an audio guide to take them through the tour, which lasts approximately 70 minutes

  • Annual Christmas Morning Run around Kilkenny Streets - Thursday 25th December - from Kilkenny Design Centre - 11am - The annual Christmas Morning Run around Kilkenny City streets, organised by Kilkenny City Harriers, assembles at the Design Centre in time for 11am departure. The event is open to the public (walkers, joggers, runners).  The route takes participants down the Parade, up John Street, over Green’s Bridge and up High Street. There is no entry fee. Donations welcome. All proceeds this year will be shared by Kilkenny St Vincent de Paul and Brothers of The Good Shepherd.   • 5k/10k Run/Walk - Friday 26th December - James Stephens GAA Club - 11.30am, €10 - If you wish to liven up after Christmas what better way than a nice bracing walk or run to work off the over-indulgence? You will be benefiting a local organisation. You can run or walk the 5km or 10 km route which begins at the club rooms. The main beneficiary will be the new ASD (Autism) Unit in St. Patrick’s DLS school. Last year almost three hundred intrepid runners and walkers enjoyed a great morning’s exercise and raised over €4100 in much needed funds. Kilkenny Castle Events

  • The 'Decius Mus' Tapestries have returned to the Castle. The Tapestries are among the great glories of the wonderful historic Ormonde Collection at Kilkenny Castle. The 'Decius' suite had been in the ownership of the Ormonde family for over 300 years and was displayed in several of their residences before being acquired by OPW for display in Kilkenny Castle. It forms a highlight of the Ormonde Collection in the Tapestry Room and fabulous Picture Gallery - one of the finest historic and architectural spaces in Ireland, kilkennycastle.ie
  • Orienteering Course - Following the December launch of the new permanent Orienteering Course at Kilkenny Castle Park, OPW is delighted to announce that three maps, Short (1.8km), Medium (2.4km) and Long (3.5km) distances, are now available to download for free on the Kilkenny Castle Website. The orienteering course is open to all, families, individuals, clubs, schools and what an amazing way to explore the flora and fauna of Kilkenny Castle Park whilst enjoying the exercise in beautiful surroundings.  There is also a small area of the Canal Walk involved in the courses, kilkennycastle.ie
  • Concert: Shippensburg University Marching Band (from Pennsylvania, USA) - Friday 2nd January - Courtyard at Kilkenny Castle - 12.30pm, free - The Shippensburg University "Red Raider" Marching Band is a corps-style marching band which performs diverse styles of music while executing challenging, contemporary marching drill. The band's repertoire consists of various styles of music including classical, jazz, pop, and traditional marches, kilkennycastle.ie
  • Concert: Otterbein University Choir (from Ohio, USA) - Saturday 3rd January - Courtyard at Kilkenny Castle - 3.30pm, free - The Otterbein Choirs offer something for everyone. Jazz, pop, classical, and choral/orchestral works are performed by our choirs on a regular basis. Students of all majors sing in the choirs, and all of the ensembles are of the highest quality. The choral and vocal program at Otterbein has a long and distinguished tradition, reaching back as far as 1858, kilkennycastle.ie
