  • Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny - access from Parliment Street - 10am to 6pm daily, €12/9.50/7 - This multi-sensory and interactive experience will take visitors on a journey through the medieval origins of brewing on the site of the St. Francis Abbey Brewery to the arrival of John Smithwick in the 1700’s, and right up to the present day.  The tour includes a life-size holographic monk and living portraits of the Smithwick’s family members.  During the tour, the Smithwick’s brewing process will be brought to life with visitors having the opportunity to experience the smells, tastes and textures of the raw materials involved in creating the perfect pint of ale. French, German, Spanish and Italian speaking visitors will be offered an audio guide to take them through the tour, which lasts approximately 70 minutes
  • Wedding Evening - Thursday 21st May - Newpark Hotel, Castlecomer Road - 5pm - Set amid thirty acres of parkland and with award-winning landscaped gardens, the Newpark Hotel provides an opulent and perfect backdrop for your wedding day. The Dunmore Suite can cater for up to 160 guests and the Glendine Suite can cater for up to 130 guests for the main wedding meal. For weddings over 180 guests both suites combine to offer you the perfect setting for a larger wedding party.   • Theatre: Barn Owl Players present 3 different plays - Thursday 21st to Saturday 23rd May - Barn Theatre, Church Lane - 8pm, €12/10 - The local group, with a cast of 14 actors and 3 member directors, will transform The Barn from next week to present a thrilling night of theatre.   • Fashion: Lisa Fitzpatrick’s Fashion Fix workshop - Saturday 23rd May - Hotel Kilkenny, College Rd - 11am to 3pm, €99 - An expert in Style and Beauty, Lisa has produced sell-out workshop roadshows for a number of years and this year she is back with the brand new workshop roadshow.  In these workshops, Lisa will be inviting guests to bring along an item of clothing that has been in their wardrobes for a long time or even still has the tag on it. Lisa will show her guests how to swap their unwanted item of clothing for something that will suit their shapes. The talk and tour will explore the exhibition Appetite for Design an exhibition featuring the work of leading Irish designers, architects, cooks and restaurateurs which will document, discuss and speculate about the design of food and their experience of it, nationalcraftgallery.ie

Kilkenny Castle Events

  • The 'Decius Mus' Tapestries have returned to the Castle. The Tapestries are among the great glories of the wonderful historic Ormonde Collection at Kilkenny Castle. The 'Decius' suite had been in the ownership of the Ormonde family for over 300 years and was displayed in several of their residences before being acquired by OPW for display in Kilkenny Castle. It forms a highlight of the Ormonde Collection in the Tapestry Room and fabulous Picture Gallery - one of the finest historic and architectural spaces in Ireland, kilkennycastle.ie
  • Orienteering Course - Following the December launch of the new permanent Orienteering Course at Kilkenny Castle Park, OPW is delighted to announce that three maps, Short (1.8km), Medium (2.4km) and Long (3.5km) distances, are now available to download for free on the Kilkenny Castle Website. The orienteering course is open to all, families, individuals, clubs, schools and what an amazing way to explore the flora and fauna of Kilkenny Castle Park whilst enjoying the exercise in beautiful surroundings.  There is also a small area of the Canal Walk involved in the courses, kilkennycastle.ie

  • Banff Mountain Film Festival (Thursday 21st May)
  • Attracting sold out audiences across the globe, the world’s most prestigious mountain film festival is returning to Kilkenny with a brand new selection of extraordinary short films from the worlds leading adventure film makers. Through the big screen you will be transported to the world’s last great wild places, follow the expeditions of some of today’s most incredible adventurers, see amazing footage of adrenaline packed action sports and be inspired by thought-provoking pieces shot from the far flung corners of the globe.   • Stagedoor presents "You Can’t Stop The Beat" (Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th May)
  • A variety show from the Stoneyford-based stage school that caters for 5-16 year olds from the surrounding areas. Produced by Sheila Raggett and Rose Kelly with choreography by Shauna Kelly, this show promises to be a great night’s entertainment for all the family. See full event & ticket details

 

Music In Kilkenny 2014/2015

  • Events taking place at Castalia Hall, Ballytobin, Callan, Co. Kilkenny. Music in Kilkenny organises a series of concerts every year. Music in Kilkenny is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Kilkenny County Council & the Camphill Community of Ballytobin. €15 admission for each concert or go to 10 concerts for €100.
  • Sunday 24th May - Athens Guitar Duo - 4pm, €15 - Duo are Dusty Woodruff(Guitar) and Matthew Anderson(Guitar). As an ensemble, both Woodruff and Anderson have performed throughout the United State, Europe and China exploring the depth and wealth of the guitar repertoire. Their performances have included master classes at major universites. Musical Opinion UK said "The playing is first-class, utterly convincing and the overall impression is one of deep musicality and welcoming, fascinating moods. A very strongly recommended issue, outstandingly well recorded"
  • Sunday 7th June - Three Choir Concert - at St Canices Cathedral, Kilkenny City - 4pm, €10/5 - A unique concert featuring the combined choirs of St Canice's Cathedral Kilkenny, Christ Church Cathedral Waterford and St Mary's Cathedral Limerick. Programme will include much-loved choral music from the Tudor period right up to the present day.
