  • Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny - access from Parliment Street - 10am to 6pm daily, €12/9.50/7 - This multi-sensory and interactive experience will take visitors on a journey through the medieval origins of brewing on the site of the St. Francis Abbey Brewery to the arrival of John Smithwick in the 1700’s, and right up to the present day.  The tour includes a life-size holographic monk and living portraits of the Smithwick’s family members.  During the tour, the Smithwick’s brewing process will be brought to life with visitors having the opportunity to experience the smells, tastes and textures of the raw materials involved in creating the perfect pint of ale. French, German, Spanish and Italian speaking visitors will be offered an audio guide to take them through the tour, which lasts approximately 70 minutes

  • Table Quiz in aid of charities - Thursday 7th May - Springhill Court Hote, Waterford Road & Billy Byrnes, John St - At Springhill Court Hotel, a quiz will be held in aid of Camphill Kilkenny, L’Arche Kilkenny and Tir na nOg Respite Centre for Children with Disabilities in Carlow. Starts at 7.30pm at cost of €40 for 4 people // Table Quiz in aid of Grow Mental Health Movement at Billy Byrnes from 8.30pm at cost of €20 for 4
  • Strictly Let's Dance Kilkenny - Friday 8th May - Lyrath Estate Hotel, Carlow Road - Event in aid of Cois Nore Cancer Support. Following 8 weeks professional training, 36 dancers will take to the stage performing various styles of dance from the tango to the Charleston, in a bid to be crowned 2015’s King and Queen of the dance floor. Last year, a whopping €60,000 was raised for Cois Nore, vesperevents.ie

  • Concert: Le Galaxie - Friday 8th May - Set Theatre, John St - 9.30pm, €13.50 - Le Galaxie have played and headlined some of the biggest and most reputable venues and festivals in Ireland and Europe. In 2013 they were named entertainment.ie Irish Live Band of the Year. Irish Times said of the band “Over the past two years, [they] have transformed themselves into a juggernaut of a party band, jack knifing into crowds who are only too happy to take the hit”, set.ie
  • Concert: Kilkenny Choir - Saturday 9th May - St Canice's Cathedral, Dean St - 8pm - The Choir will present Mass in A flat major for soloists, chorus, orchestra & organ by Franz Schubert and also Schubert’s Intende voci, an eloquent aria for tenor, chorus and orchestra, kclr96fm.com/events

Kilkenny Castle Events

  • The 'Decius Mus' Tapestries have returned to the Castle. The Tapestries are among the great glories of the wonderful historic Ormonde Collection at Kilkenny Castle. The 'Decius' suite had been in the ownership of the Ormonde family for over 300 years and was displayed in several of their residences before being acquired by OPW for display in Kilkenny Castle. It forms a highlight of the Ormonde Collection in the Tapestry Room and fabulous Picture Gallery - one of the finest historic and architectural spaces in Ireland, kilkennycastle.ie
  • Orienteering Course - Following the December launch of the new permanent Orienteering Course at Kilkenny Castle Park, OPW is delighted to announce that three maps, Short (1.8km), Medium (2.4km) and Long (3.5km) distances, are now available to download for free on the Kilkenny Castle Website. The orienteering course is open to all, families, individuals, clubs, schools and what an amazing way to explore the flora and fauna of Kilkenny Castle Park whilst enjoying the exercise in beautiful surroundings.  There is also a small area of the Canal Walk involved in the courses, kilkennycastle.ie

  • Theatre: The Assassination of Brian Boru (Wednesday 6th May)
  • Two brothers of conflicting ideals sail to Ireland to defeat the High King Brian Boru. Over the course of the journey they part enemies, and meet again on opposite sides of the battlefield. Brian Boru was assassinated at the battle of Clontarf 1014. A story of brotherhood, blood, ravens on the battle field and the death of a great king. See full event & ticket details
  • Concert: Cream Of Kilkenny Cats Jazz Spectacular (Friday 8th May)
  • The cream of Kilkenny’s best young musicians take to the stage again to showcase their amazing talent. Jazz bands from St. Canice’s primary school, CBS secondary school, Kieran’s College, Kilkenny College, Castlecomer Community School and Loreto secondary school are gearing up to entertain you with a feast of musical fare from Tina Turner to Thin Lizzy and Barry White to The Blues Brothers.   • Mend & Makedo Theatre Company present "Lucinda Sly" (Saturday 9th May)
  • In March 1835, ten thousand people crammed the streets of Carlow to see the public hanging of Lucinda Sly and John Dempsey. It was to be the last public hanging of a woman in the town. Sly and Dempsey had been convicted of the murder of Lucinda’s husband, Walter. Lucinda was a Protestant, John a Catholic; Lucinda was a landowner, John her labourer; Lucinda was 58 years old, John was less than half her age. They were lovers. John MacKenna’s new play is a tale of love, lust, land and murder – a passionate and powerful play intended for over-16s. See full event & ticket details

 

Music In Kilkenny 2014/2015

  • Events taking place at Castalia Hall, Ballytobin, Callan, Co. Kilkenny. Music in Kilkenny organises a series of concerts every year. Music in Kilkenny is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Kilkenny County Council & the Camphill Community of Ballytobin. €15 admission for each concert or go to 10 concerts for €100.
  • Saturday 9th May - Ashley Wass (piano) - 8pm - Described as an 'endlessly fascinating artist', Wass is firmly established as one of the leading performers of his generation. He is the only British winner of the London International Piano Competition. He has performed at many of the world's finest concert halls including Wigmore Hall and Carnegie Hall. He will be performing music by Chopin, Gershwin, Szpilman and more
  • Sunday 24th May - Athens Guitar Duo - 4pm
  • Sunday 7th June - Three Choir Concert - at St Canices Cathedral, Kilkenny City - 4pm, €10/5 - A unique concert featuring the combined choirs of St Canice's Cathedral Kilkenny, Christ Church Cathedral Waterford and St Mary's Cathedral Limerick. Programme will include much-loved choral music from the Tudor period right up to the present day.
