  • Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny - access from Parliment Street - 10am to 6pm daily, €12/9.50/7 - This multi-sensory and interactive experience will take visitors on a journey through the medieval origins of brewing on the site of the St. Francis Abbey Brewery to the arrival of John Smithwick in the 1700’s, and right up to the present day.  The tour includes a life-size holographic monk and living portraits of the Smithwick’s family members.  During the tour, the Smithwick’s brewing process will be brought to life with visitors having the opportunity to experience the smells, tastes and textures of the raw materials involved in creating the perfect pint of ale. French, German, Spanish and Italian speaking visitors will be offered an audio guide to take them through the tour, which lasts approximately 70 minutes

  • Medieval Week: Guided Tour of St Canices Cathedral Stained Glass - Monday 20th April - St Canices Cathedral, Dean St - 2pm, €4 - A guided tour of the Cathedral focusing on stained glass windows and their function in the Cathedral during medieval times.   • Medieval Week: Guided Tour of Medieval Cathedral Close - Tuesday 21st & Friday 24th April - St Canices Cathedral, Dean St - 2pm, €4 - View new artistic drawings of the medieval Cathedral close, followed by a tour around the significant sites within the Close.   • Culture: Late Date with Meet The Makers - Thursday 23rd April - National Craft Gallery, Castle Yard - 6.30pm - Join the National Gallery for their Late Date with maker Simon Doyle where he will discuss his work in the current exhibition Side by Side. Simon Doyle is a furniture designer and maker based in Dublin. He describes the Shakers as an early influence, the 19th century American religious sect whose furniture rejected decoration in favour of the simple; seeking beauty through quality and reduction. He believes they sought this beauty and proportion in spite of it being unnecessary to the function of the object but because it was contributory to their inner peace and harmony, nationalcraftgallery.ie

  • Wine & Food Tasting Night in aid of Cois Nore Cancer Support - Thursday 23rd April - Paris Texas, High St - 8pm - At Paris Texas they try to offer American food that is quality and value, using the best local ingredients available. They also try to reward the more adventurous diner with new and different treats that can surprise as well as please. This is their hope for their food and wine tasting dinner this April 23rd.   • Medieval Week: Milling Workshops & Forge Demos - Saturday 25th April - Nore Valley Farm, Bennettsbridge, Co.Kilkenny - 9am to 6pm, €7/6.50 - Experience a medieval farm at work. After seeing all the animals try your hand at milling grain and making a simple medieval bread. Watch our blacksmith at work showing how weapons were made and armour was forged.   • Medieval Week: StoryLab Viking Skald - Saturday 25th April - Parade Tower at Kilkenny Castle - 12pm & 2.30pm, free (but booking required) - Kilkenny Castle presents Púca Puppets and Mary, a Viking character that will delight children with her storytelling.   • Medieval Week: Talk: The Early Theobalds - Saturday 25th April - Kilkenny Castle - 3.30pm, free - Peter Kenny, Guide/Information Office with the Office of Public Works, will talk about the origin of the Butler Family and present the lives and legacies of the early Theobalds, visitkilkenny.ie/medieval_week

  • Athletics: Churchill 10k Race / 5k Fun Run followed by Family Fun Day - Sunday 26th April - Cuffesgrange, Co.Kilkenny - 12pm - At 12pm, there will be a 5K Fun Run. From 1pm, there will be a 10k Race and 10k Walk. This will be followed by a Family Fun day with bouncy castles, entertainment, catering & great winners prizes, facebook.com/ChurchHill10k

  • Medieval Week: The Medieval Harp followed by Harp Recital - Sunday 26th April - Picture Gallery at Kilkenny Castle - 1pm, free - From 1pm there will be an illustrated talk on the history of Ireland’s illustrious medieval instrument, internationally acclaimed performer Siobhan Armstrong from the Historical Harp Society of Ireland will present the 1000-year history of the Irish harp with live music examples. From 2pm, she will perform a harp recital. During this recital of early Irish harp music, she will be playing this ancient instrument as depicted in Ireland’s national emblem.   • Horse Racing: Flat Racing - Sunday 26th April - Gowran Park, Gowran, Co.Kilkenny - first race at 2.25pm - The course is a right-handed undulating track of one mile and four furlongs in length that stages flat and National Hunt racing. If somebody asked you to put a racecourse anywhere in Ireland the chances are you would set it down in Gowran Park. There is something very homely and localised about the place, it's probably something to do with the wooded parkland, in the centre of which the racecourse is cuddled, giving it a warmth and character that is not to be found on any other course in Ireland, gowranpark.ie

Kilkenny Castle Events

  • The 'Decius Mus' Tapestries have returned to the Castle. The Tapestries are among the great glories of the wonderful historic Ormonde Collection at Kilkenny Castle. The 'Decius' suite had been in the ownership of the Ormonde family for over 300 years and was displayed in several of their residences before being acquired by OPW for display in Kilkenny Castle. It forms a highlight of the Ormonde Collection in the Tapestry Room and fabulous Picture Gallery - one of the finest historic and architectural spaces in Ireland, kilkennycastle.ie
  • Orienteering Course - Following the December launch of the new permanent Orienteering Course at Kilkenny Castle Park, OPW is delighted to announce that three maps, Short (1.8km), Medium (2.4km) and Long (3.5km) distances, are now available to download for free on the Kilkenny Castle Website. The orienteering course is open to all, families, individuals, clubs, schools and what an amazing way to explore the flora and fauna of Kilkenny Castle Park whilst enjoying the exercise in beautiful surroundings.  There is also a small area of the Canal Walk involved in the courses, kilkennycastle.ie

  • Ballet Ireland present "Tutus And Beyond" (Wednesday 22nd April)
  • The journey beyond tutus takes us from traditional classical ballet to the striking contemporary work being produced today. Pas de Quatre, the romantic classic caused a sensation when it was created for the four greatest ballerinas of the time in 1845. Next up, Sing Sing Sing inspired by Bob Fosse, a legendary choreographer of Broadway & Hollywood throughout the 60s and 70s. The second half of the programme features the premiere of a powerful and magical new ballet, Lost, created for the company by Ludovic Ondiviela. See full event & ticket details
  • Garda Traffic Unit and Kilkenny County Council present Road Safety Show (Monday 27th & Tuesday 28th April)
  • This presentation has been developed by the Garda Road Safety Unit and is aimed at Transition Year students. It is present by Kilkenny Garda Traffic Unit in conjunction with Kilkenny County Council. It is a combination of audio/visual as well as interactive based learning and the presentation deals with the four main reasons for road fatalities: Speed, intoxication, fatigue and safety belts. Music In Kilkenny 2014/2015

  • Events taking place at Castalia Hall, Ballytobin, Callan, Co. Kilkenny. Music in Kilkenny organises a series of concerts every year. Music in Kilkenny is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Kilkenny County Council & the Camphill Community of Ballytobin. €15 admission for each concert or go to 10 concerts for €100.
  • Sunday 26th April - Duo Dzeta ft. Aude Miller (violin) & Geoffrey Baptiste (piano) - 4pm - Aude Miller and Geoffrey Baptiste, both musicians with the Liege Royal Philharmonic, founded the Duo Dzeta in 2005 to share their passion for chamber music. Since then they have performed throughout Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Bulgaria. Aude has played with the Opera de Paris and Boulez's Ensemble Intercontemporain. Geoffrey has played with Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and the Limburg Symphony Orchestra.
  • Sunday 4th May - Royal Irish Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra - 4pm
  • Saturday 9th May - Ashley Wass (piano) - 8pm
  • Sunday 24th May - Athens Guitar Duo - 4pm
  • Sunday 7th June - Three Choir Concert - at St Canices Cathedral, Kilkenny City - 4pm, €10/5 - A unique concert featuring the combined choirs of St Canice's Cathedral Kilkenny, Christ Church Cathedral Waterford and St Mary's Cathedral Limerick. Programme will include much-loved choral music from the Tudor period right up to the present day.
